Budapest District VII — Erzsébetváros

Erzsébetváros is often reduced to the Jewish Quarter and ruin bars. This route keeps both, but places them inside a denser history of nineteenth-century Jewish urban life, linked courtyards, markets, the 1944 ghetto, mass entertainment, Hungarian radio, artisan workshops and the explosive growth of outer ‘Csikágó’. It is a guide about people living closely together—and about what happens when commerce, persecution and tourism repeatedly rewrite the same streets.
