Budapest District XXI — Csepel

Csepel is Budapest’s great island industrial story. A rural settlement rebuilt after the 1838 flood was transformed after the Weiss brothers established ammunition production in the 1890s; the works became one of Hungary’s largest industrial complexes and shaped housing, welfare, transport and politics. This guide follows the factory city, water tower, worker institutions, port, HÉV, 1956, Királyerdő and Tamariska Hill to show how industrial identity survived every regime change.
