Pál-völgyi Cave: The Quarry That Opened a Hidden City

Pál-völgyi Cave entered recorded history because quarrying accidentally opened a door.
On June 23, 1904, explorers entered passages from the Pál-völgy quarry beside Szépvölgyi Road. Duna-Ipoly National Park identifies Pál Kornél Scholtz and János Bagyura as the discoverers. By 1910 early explorers had already mapped roughly twelve hundred meters.
That was only the beginning.
Continued exploration and later connections between cave systems revealed a far larger underground network. The national park now describes the Pál-völgyi–Mátyás-hegyi system, linked with additional passages, as approximately thirty-two kilometers long and the longest known cave system in Hungary.
Only a small part is developed for ordinary visitors. That ratio is worth remembering: the public cave is a window into a much larger hidden landscape.
The geometry here also feels different from Szemlő-hegyi. Pál-völgyi is known for high fissures, dramatic changes in level and a more adventurous spatial character. Both caves belong to the same Buda thermal-karst world, but they show different consequences of water moving through fractured limestone.
There is a human irony too. Quarrying was literally removing the hill for building stone when it exposed something now protected as natural heritage. Extraction revealed the value that later conservation had to protect.
The caves make District II’s geography harder to take for granted. Streets, villas and bus routes occupy only the visible surface of a much older system.
From here our story turns west again, toward Hűvösvölgy. There, archaeological ruins reveal that the Buda Hills were not merely an escape from the medieval capital. Kings deliberately used this landscape as part of court life.
