Pécs became a bishopric early in the medieval Kingdom of Hungary, and the cathedral complex developed through Romanesque, Gothic and later rebuilding.
The city also hosted a university founded in 1367 under King Louis I, traditionally regarded as the first university in medieval Hungary. The institution did not survive continuously, so it should not be confused with the modern University of Pécs’s uninterrupted institutional age.
Medieval Pécs combined episcopal authority, trade and education in a southern Hungarian city close to routes toward the Balkans.
That geography later made it vulnerable during Ottoman-Habsburg wars.
Universities and cathedrals share one survival strategy: if continuity becomes difficult, build an excellent commemorative plaque.
