Renovation work revealed a sealed crypt containing eighteenth- and nineteenth-century coffins and naturally mummified bodies. The find offers unusual evidence about disease, burial custom, clothing and family life in Baroque VAATS.
Read the inscription date as carefully as the event date. The distance between them tells you when and why the community chose to make this memory public.
Public memory is selective by definition. The monument tells us what later generations wanted to emphasize, while absences and changed inscriptions can reveal equally important shifts.
This stop also helps distinguish the town from Budapest: the same historical forces operated here, but they produced a different scale and pattern of urban life.
