The Bacci Chapel contains Piero della Francesca’s fresco cycle usually called The Legend of the True Cross. The word “legend” matters. The narrative comes from medieval Christian tradition, especially the Golden Legend; it is not a documented history of the actual cross used at the Crucifixion.
Piero transformed that legendary sequence into one of the masterpieces of early Renaissance painting. His figures inhabit calm geometric spaces, and light gives even miraculous episodes an almost measured physical presence.
The commission also reveals how art functioned socially. A wealthy family chapel could become a public monument centuries later. What began as private patronage now helps define Arezzo internationally.
