Giorgio Vasari is famous not only as a painter and architect but as the author of Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects, a book that strongly shaped later ideas of the Renaissance. His house in Arezzo lets us see him managing his image in another medium.
Vasari bought and decorated the residence in the sixteenth century, filling rooms with allegorical painting and carefully composed imagery. The home becomes almost a manifesto for the cultivated artist: not a mere craftsman, but a learned designer capable of controlling architecture, painting and intellectual narrative.
That matters because Vasari’s writing helped establish the very hierarchy of “great masters” through which tourists still encounter Italian art. Here the historian of artistic fame was also building his own.
