Cosimo I de’ Medici ordered major work on Arezzo’s fortress in the sixteenth century as Florence consolidated control over Tuscany. Antonio da Sangallo the Younger directed construction of a modern bastioned system adapted to artillery.
Fortresses like this are often described simply as protection from external enemies. They also helped rulers control subject cities. A strong citadel placed troops and artillery in a position from which rebellion could be contained as well as invasion resisted.
The fortress was damaged and altered in later centuries, then became public space. Its present park-like character can soften the original political message. Renaissance military engineering was not neutral technology; it materially changed the balance between local autonomy and centralized state power.
