The cathedral was rebuilt in the seventeenth century under Bishop Luigi Pappacoda, with architect Giuseppe Zimbalo helping transform both church and square. Notice something unusual: the cathedral has two façades. One is the formal front; the other addresses the entrance to the enclosed Piazza del Duomo.
That second façade is urban choreography. Visitors entering the square are met by a carefully composed religious ensemble of cathedral, bell tower, seminary and episcopal palace. The Baroque project did not decorate one building; it organized movement and sightlines.
The result makes church authority spatial. You do not merely look at the bishop’s institutions—you enter a precinct shaped by them.
