Medieval Italian skylines were once crowded with private towers. They provided defence, but they also announced status. The Guinigi family, one of Lucca’s leading merchant dynasties, built this tower as part of a palace complex.
The rooftop holm oaks now give it a romantic profile. The underlying story is harder: commercial wealth translated into property, office, marriage alliances and vertical competition.
Most family towers disappeared or were cut down as communal governments tried to control private militarisation. Guinigi survives as an exception, making visible a much more crowded and politically tense medieval skyline.
