For a small republic, issuing coin was a declaration of sovereignty. Lucca maintained a mint for centuries under changing regimes and during its long independent republican period.
A coin works only if people trust its weight, metal and issuing authority. Minting therefore combined metallurgy, law and reputation. Long-distance merchants might use many currencies and bills of exchange, but recognised local coinage remained important infrastructure.
The mint makes Lucca’s independence tangible. Fortifications defended the republic physically; taxation and coinage made it function institutionally. Political authority could be stamped into metal and carried far beyond the walls.
