Founded by the Venetian Republic in 1545, Padua’s botanical garden is the oldest university botanical garden still operating in its original location. Its first purpose was practical: medical students needed to identify genuine medicinal plants and distinguish them from dangerous substitutes.
The circular design helped organize specimens systematically, while global trade brought new plants into European study. Over time the garden became a place for botany in its own right, not merely pharmacy.
That shift—from collecting useful plants to asking broader scientific questions—is why UNESCO treats the garden as more than a pretty historic enclosure. It represents a method: observe living material directly, compare it and teach from specimens rather than authority alone.
