The baptistery beside Padua Cathedral contains a vast fourteenth-century fresco cycle by Giusto de’ Menabuoi. Its dome centres on Christ surrounded by concentric ranks of saints and angels, creating an image that feels almost architectural in its geometry.
The commission was closely linked to the Carraresi ruling family, whose patronage shaped late-medieval Padua. Baptism, dynastic identity and visual theology therefore occupy the same small building.
Compared with the Scrovegni Chapel, the artistic effect is different. Giotto builds narrative scene by scene; Menabuoi overwhelms the viewer with a cosmic hierarchy. Two nearby interiors show that medieval painting in Padua had no single visual language.
