Across Piazza dei Signori, the Loggia del Capitaniato looks almost confrontational beside the pale Basilica. Palladio designed it for the Venetian captain who represented the Republic’s authority in Vicenza.
The giant half-columns, rich stucco and red brick create a much heavier composition than the Basilica opposite. Reliefs on the side refer to Venice’s victory over the Ottoman Empire at Lepanto in 1571. Architecture here is political theatre: the local city and its Venetian governor face each other across the same square.
Putting these two Palladian buildings together is useful because they demolish the idea of a single “Palladio look.” The same architect could make one façade measured and repetitive, another muscular and propagandistic, depending on patron and purpose.
