La Rotonda is one of Palladio’s most influential buildings, but calling it a farmhouse is misleading. Commissioned for Paolo Almerico, a retired Vatican official, it was a suburban retreat positioned on a hill outside Vicenza.
Four nearly identical temple-front porticoes face four directions, while a central domed hall organizes the plan. The symmetry is striking, yet the building is also intensely responsive to landscape. Each portico frames a different view.
Later architects copied the composition across Europe and North America, helping create the global language we call Palladianism. What travelled was not simply a façade. It was an idea that classical order could organize domestic life, social status and landscape into one controlled composition.
