Bologna did not simply acquire a university and a handsome old centre. Its medieval students, legal scholars, communes, merchant families and tower-builders helped create a new kind of European city. This walk follows the argument from civic square to lecture hall, defensive skyline, scholarly quarter and a piazza still associated with political dissent.
