Sant'Andrea is one of Leon Battista Alberti's major architectural statements. Its monumental façade borrows the language of Roman triumphal arches and applies it to a Christian basilica.
That does not mean Alberti simply copied antiquity. Renaissance classicism was creative reuse. Architects studied Roman forms because they carried associations of order, authority and technical sophistication, then recombined them for new religious and civic purposes.
The church also housed an important relic tradition associated with the Blood of Christ, making it a pilgrimage destination. Pilgrimage brought people, money and prestige. Architecture had to accommodate ritual crowds while communicating the importance of the relic.
The Gonzaga understood the political value of such a monument. A major church designed by a famous humanist architect placed Mantua inside the most ambitious artistic conversations of fifteenth-century Italy.
Alberti himself was a theorist as well as architect, writing on painting, architecture and perspective. His career demonstrates how Renaissance culture linked practice to intellectual systems. Buildings could be arguments about proportion and antiquity as well as places to stand out of the rain.
Look at the scale. Compared with the compact Rotonda nearby, Sant'Andrea feels deliberately imperial. That contrast is not accidental. Renaissance patrons wanted new architecture to announce a new relationship with the classical past.
Yet construction continued long after Alberti's death, another warning against treating great buildings as the single-handed work of one genius. Designers begin; workshops, patrons and later architects finish.
We now move south toward the Pescherie, where Giulio Romano applied courtly design to something gloriously practical: fish markets and water infrastructure.
