The artisan quarter at POJ-joh boh-NEE-tsyoh is important because the excavated medieval city was not only houses and fortifications. Archaeological evidence for workshops allows the hill to be reconstructed as an economy of specialized labor serving residents, travelers and regional exchange before Florence destroyed the settlement in the thirteenth century. The experimental reconstructions nearby make those craft processes legible at human scale.
