The large sanctuary began in the late fifteenth century after a local Marian cult developed. Its scale is striking for a site outside the medieval core and demonstrates the strength of pilgrimage devotion.
Notice the forecourt, tower, adjoining rooms and surrounding houses; they reveal how worship was embedded in community life.
Religious continuity does not guarantee social continuity. Congregations can change size, language and political position while a building remains.
The route deliberately keeps this as a separate stop because its users and function differ from the sites around it.
The previous stop emphasized transport, while the next shifts toward religion. The change of lens is deliberate.
The visible object is therefore evidence of a larger system rather than the whole story.
A useful local-history question is what had to happen here every day for the place to work; repeated routines often explain a town better than exceptional ceremonies.
The present appearance should not be treated as the historical endpoint. Ownership, users and surroundings may have changed even when the address remained familiar.
