Montalcino's fortress is where the rivalry between Siena and Florence becomes physical.
Construction began in 1361 under Sienese control, incorporating earlier fortifications. Its dramatic political afterlife came two centuries later.
Siena fell to Medici forces in 1555, but Sienese republican resistance continued from Montalcino. The town became the centre of the Republic of Siena in Montalcino until 1559.
That sequence matters because historical endings are rarely tidy. “Siena fell in 1555” is true. So is “Sienese resistance continued afterward.” Montalcino preserves the second sentence.
Today the fortress gives visitors views over vineyards and countryside. A defensive landscape became an agricultural and tourist landscape without losing the architecture of conflict.
Before the wine story takes over, remember: Brunello did not create Montalcino. Wine gave an older strategic town a new global identity.
