Kampana Tower sits where the river and bay-side walls meet, making the defensive geometry easy to read.
Kotor belonged to Venice’s Stato da Mar, the chain of maritime territories and fortified ports that protected trade routes through the Adriatic and toward the eastern Mediterranean.
As gunpowder weapons developed, fortifications needed thicker walls, angled bastions and fields of fire rather than simply high medieval towers.
Kotor’s defensive system is now recognised within UNESCO’s wider Venetian Works of Defence serial heritage.
That context matters because the walls were not a local curiosity. They were one node in a strategic network stretching over a thousand kilometres.
