The Maritime Museum occupies a former patrician palace, which is already an argument about Kotor’s economy. Seafaring wealth became urban architecture.
The Bay of Kotor produced captains, shipowners and sailors who operated throughout the Adriatic and Mediterranean. Maritime skill was not limited to navigation. It required commercial knowledge, credit, diplomacy, ship maintenance and family networks spread across ports.
UNESCO specifically identifies Kotor and neighbouring towns as centres whose artistic and commercial influence travelled along the Adriatic coast.
The museum therefore helps explain why the old town contains so many elaborate churches and palaces despite its tiny footprint.
Kotor’s wealth was not generated by the stone walls around you. It arrived by sea, then was converted into stone.
