The Sea Gate is the principal ceremonial entrance into Kotor’s old town. It opens directly from the harbour into Arms Square, compressing maritime arrival and civic power into a few steps.
Much of the city’s surviving urban character developed during centuries under the Republic of Venice, when Kotor formed part of a wider Adriatic defensive and commercial network.
The square’s name reflects its military role, but it was also a place of administration, trade and public display.
Look back toward the water. Kotor’s walls make sense only if you imagine threats arriving both by sea and over the surrounding mountains. The city was a port before it was a tourism image.
The gate therefore introduces the central idea of the guide: maritime commerce paid for urban sophistication, while the same strategic harbour required expensive defence.
