Stavanger Cathedral is traditionally dated to the early twelfth century and is closely tied to the establishment of the bishopric. The city celebrated nine hundred years in 2025 around the conventional date of 1125. A cathedral does more than provide worship space: it attracts clergy, administration, markets, pilgrims and building trades. That institutional concentration helped turn Stavanger into an urban centre. The church has been altered repeatedly, especially after medieval fires and later restorations, so the visible building is not a perfectly preserved twelfth-century object. Its continuity lies in function and location. For nine centuries, the cathedral has kept one point in Stavanger stable while the economy around it changed radically.
