Stavanger Museum was founded in 1877, when ships, missionaries and emigrant networks connected the city to places far beyond Norway. Early collections included animals and objects brought back by sailors and travelers, giving local visitors a window onto a much larger world. Museums of this era often mixed serious scientific collecting with the assumptions of European empire and exploration. Stavanger’s institution gradually became more systematic, especially in natural history and bird research. The museum therefore belongs to the same maritime story as the harbour: ships moved not only fish and people, but specimens, knowledge and ideas about how the world should be classified.
