Valberg Tower served as a fire-watch tower in a city built largely of timber. From here watchmen could scan roofs and harbour districts for smoke and alert the town. The job sounds simple until you remember the urban stakes. A small fire in dense wooden streets could cross roofs quickly, while wind from the coast made control harder. Fire prevention therefore required visibility, alarm systems, water access and organized response. The tower is a reminder that beautiful wooden heritage survived within a constant risk environment. Stavanger’s historic streets are not evidence that timber cities were safe; they are evidence that communities invested in systems to detect disaster early enough to fight it.
