Bergen

Bergen became medieval Norway’s great Atlantic trading city and, from the fourteenth century, one of the Hanse’s four major overseas kontors. Stockfish from northern Norway moved through German merchant networks here. Fire and plague repeatedly struck a dense wooden port, yet Bryggen’s commercial structure survived long enough to make logistics into World Heritage.
