Gdańsk

Gdańsk grew rich where the Vistula met the Baltic, linking Polish grain and timber to northern European trade. Its sovereignty and population changed repeatedly. In 1939 the city became one of the opening theatres of the Second World War; in 1980 its shipyard produced Solidarity, the mass movement that helped destabilise communist rule across central Europe.
