Saint Nicholas Church anchors the Romanian history of Șchei. The present complex grew over centuries on a site associated with an earlier Orthodox community.
The church, school and printing activity around it created an institutional centre outside the Saxon fortified core. Clergy and merchants maintained ties with Wallachia and Moldavia, bringing books, donations and political connections across the Carpathians.
This is why Brașov should not be told as one blended multicultural city. Different communities built distinct institutions because their rights, churches and civic positions were different.
Șchei was connected to Kronstadt economically yet remained socially and administratively distinct for long periods.
Ending here makes that geography visible: the old gate behind you did not separate civilisation from countryside. It separated two urban communities that were neighbours, trading partners and not legal equals.
