The White and Black Towers stand outside the main wall because they were advanced observation and defensive positions.
Their elevated sites allowed guards to watch approaches and support the wall below. The Black Tower’s name is associated with fire damage, while the White Tower was maintained by guilds including tinsmiths and coppersmiths in different periods.
From here, the geometry of the old city becomes clearer. Council Square and the Black Church sit inside a compact defensive basin, while Șchei extends beyond the southwest gates.
The towers are therefore better viewpoints for understanding power than for taking photographs. They reveal which parts of the city were inside protection, where gates restricted movement and how terrain was incorporated into defence.
