Timișoara’s growth depended on turning water from obstacle into infrastructure.
In the eighteenth century, the Bega was canalised and surrounding wetlands were drained under Habsburg administration. The canal improved flood control, made transport possible and connected the city toward the Tisa and Danube systems.
By the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, it carried substantial freight and passengers. In 1910 a hydroelectric plant in Fabric used the canal’s flow to generate power.
This is why Timișoara’s reputation for technical modernisation cannot be reduced to a list of “firsts.” The important achievement was systems integration: drainage, navigation, industry and electricity all depended on controlled water.
The pleasant riverfront visible today is the descendant of a major engineering project that made the modern city possible.
