The great Gothic church became Lutheran after the Reformation reached the Saxon communities of Transylvania in the sixteenth century.
That religious change altered worship, education and civic identity without requiring the medieval church to be replaced.
Transylvania was unusually complex confessionally: Catholic, Lutheran, Reformed, Unitarian and Orthodox communities all existed under changing legal arrangements. Relative toleration in some periods did not mean equal status for every group.
The cathedral therefore represents both Saxon cultural autonomy and the limits of broad “multicultural Transylvania” slogans.
Inside is the tomb of Samuel von Brukenthal, the eighteenth-century Habsburg governor whose palace is another stop.
Religious pluralism is historically interesting because it required rules. Harmony is what souvenir shops call the rules afterwards.
