Sibiu’s surviving walls and towers were maintained historically by craft guilds. Individual towers became associated with trades such as carpenters, potters or arquebusiers.
Guilds regulated training, quality and market access while also carrying civic duties. Defence was therefore partly organised through occupational communities.
The fortifications were strengthened over centuries because Transylvania sat near major routes and periodically faced military threats, including Ottoman campaigns.
Tourists see picturesque brick towers. Medieval artisans saw mandatory infrastructure and another reason to attend guild meetings.
The walls also mark privilege. Those protected inside did not automatically include everyone in the surrounding region on equal terms.
Fortified urbanism is community solidarity with a gatekeeper.
