Banská Štiavnica became one of Europe’s major silver- and gold-mining centres and solved a fundamental engineering problem: how to power mines high in the mountains without a large natural river. Its reservoirs, channels, drainage systems and 1762 Mining Academy turned landscape into industrial infrastructure and helped professionalise technical education.
