National and University Library

The National and University Library, completed before the Second World War, is one of Plečnik’s most monumental works. Its dark brick and stone exterior deliberately looks weighty, while the interior route rises toward a luminous reading room.

That movement is often read symbolically as a passage from darkness toward knowledge. Symbolic interpretations can become overconfident, but here Plečnik’s staging is too deliberate to ignore.

The institution itself mattered in a city becoming a national cultural centre. Books, archives and universities are infrastructure for political communities as surely as roads are.

Notice the reused-looking fragments and varied masonry on the façade. Plečnik liked making new architecture converse with the idea of antiquity, even when the “archaeological” feeling was newly designed.

A library should probably discourage drama. Plečnik gave it an entrance sequence anyway.
