On 12 October 1936, during the early months of the Spanish Civil War, a ceremony in the university’s Paraninfo became associated with Miguel de Unamuno’s public confrontation with supporters of the military uprising.
Unamuno had initially supported the rebellion against the Republic, then became increasingly horrified by repression. Accounts agree that he challenged the atmosphere of militant nationalism at the event and soon afterwards was removed from public life and confined to his home. He died on 31 December 1936.
The exact wording of the famous line “You will win, but you will not convince” is disputed. University of Salamanca documentary material notes conflicting reconstructions of the speech. So this guide will not pretend a perfect transcript exists.
That uncertainty does not make the confrontation fictional. It teaches a better lesson: memorable quotations are often polished by memory after events.
Unamuno spent his life arguing. In 1936 the argument became dangerous enough to end his public career.
