Geologic time is almost impossible to imagine directly.

The Trail of Time uses distance to make the numbers physical.

As you walk, markers represent increasing spans of Earth's history, while rock samples connect abstract ages with material from canyon formations.

The design is an interpretive technology.

A museum label can tell you one rock is hundreds of millions of years old.

Your brain acknowledges the number and moves on.

Walking a scaled timeline forces your body to experience relative duration.

Human history occupies almost nothing at the end.

That can create a philosophical mistake.

If geologic time is enormous, human actions may seem insignificant.

At management scale, they are not.

A road can alter habitat in a decade.

Groundwater pumping can affect springs.

Mining proposals outside park boundaries can threaten connected systems.

Climate change can alter snow, heat and fire patterns within human lifetimes.

Deep time does not make current choices irrelevant.

It makes their speed remarkable.

The canyon walls record changes that took millions of years.

Humans can change visitor numbers, water demand and land use in a generation.

For locals and repeat visitors, this is one of the most intellectually satisfying parts of the South Rim.

It turns scenery into evidence.

For tourists, use it to correct the instinct that Grand Canyon is simply “old.”

The rocks have different ages.

The canyon has a younger erosional history.

The park has a very recent political history.
