San Francisco's cable cars exist because horses were bad at San Francisco.
Before electric streetcars, horse-drawn vehicles struggled on steep grades, especially on wet pavement. Andrew Smith Hallidie adapted wire-rope technology used in mining and industrial hauling to move streetcars by a continuously running underground cable.
The first successful line was tested on Clay Street in 1873.
The system was ingenious but mechanical. A central powerhouse moved the cable. A grip operator on each car physically grabbed or released it through a slot in the street. Cars could climb grades horses found dangerous.
Cable railways spread across the city and dominated transit for decades.
Then technology moved on. Electric streetcars were cheaper and easier to expand. The 1906 earthquake and fire destroyed much cable infrastructure. By the mid-twentieth century, city officials repeatedly considered replacing remaining lines with buses.
Citizens fought back.
That campaign transformed the cable car from obsolete transport into protected identity.
This is a pattern worth noticing. Heritage often begins when a useful technology becomes economically irrational but emotionally valuable.
The cars still function as transit, but they also perform San Francisco for the world. The museum's machinery makes that dual role visible. Huge sheaves pull cables beneath streets while tourists above treat the ride as nineteenth-century magic.
It is not magic. It is an operating mechanical system requiring constant maintenance.
For locals, the cable car can feel like something visitors queue for. Historically, it belongs to a serious transportation problem: how to build a dense city on steep hills before modern traction.
