The Monadnock Block looks almost severe compared with many nineteenth-century buildings around it.
Its most impressive feature is partly invisible:
the enormous thickness of its masonry walls.
The northern portion, completed around 1891 by Burnham and Root, rose sixteen stories using load-bearing brick masonry.
At the base, walls had to become extraordinarily thick to carry the weight above.
The building demonstrates how far traditional masonry construction could be pushed.
It also demonstrates why skeletal framing became so attractive.
The southern addition used a metal frame more directly.
Within one building complex, visitors can see the construction industry moving between systems.
That makes Monadnock a better teaching object than arguments over which Chicago building deserves the title “first skyscraper.”
Historians can define that term through height, framing, elevators or commercial form and reach different answers.
The important transformation is clear.
Chicago land values rewarded vertical construction.
Technology made vertical construction more practical.
The city's post-fire commercial boom created a market willing to experiment.
For locals, Monadnock is an office building that has simply remained useful.
That usefulness is part of its preservation.
A building that still rents space does not survive only because historians love it.
For visitors, stand close to the base and imagine the weight.
The early skyscraper was not born from one genius eliminating walls.
It emerged from engineers discovering just how inconvenient walls became when a city wanted to keep going upward.
