Holland Tunnel: Cars Enter the River Age

Railroad tunnels solved one transportation problem.

Automobiles created another.

By the early twentieth century, cars and trucks were multiplying rapidly.

Ferries could carry vehicles across the Hudson, but traffic demanded a fixed crossing.

The Holland Tunnel opened in 1927 between Jersey City and lower Manhattan.

Its name honors chief engineer Clifford Holland, who died before the project was completed.

The great technical challenge was not simply digging under the river.

It was air.

Automobile engines produce carbon monoxide.

A long tunnel filled with exhaust could become deadly.

Engineers designed a powerful transverse ventilation system that supplied fresh air through ducts and removed polluted air continuously.

The system became internationally influential and is one reason the tunnel was later designated a National Historic Landmark.

The tunnel also changed Jersey City physically.

Road approaches cut through neighborhoods and reorganized traffic.

The automobile age did not simply add mobility.

It demanded enormous urban space for ramps, portals and connecting roads.

That tradeoff is easy to overlook because modern drivers experience the tunnel as a few minutes of enclosed roadway.
