Branch Brook Park is famous for cherry blossoms.

The park is more important than the blossoms.

Essex County identifies Branch Brook as the first county park in the United States opened for public use.

The landscape developed in stages rather than from one perfect master plan.

Frederick Law Olmsted Senior advised county planners.

Later, the Olmsted Brothers firm redesigned significant portions of the park in the early twentieth century.

That distinction matters because the name “Olmsted” is often used as if one famous man personally designed every American park associated with his office.

The site itself had earlier uses.

During the Civil War, troops trained in this broader landscape.

As Newark industrialized, reformers increasingly saw public green space as essential urban infrastructure.

Parks were expected to improve health, provide recreation and create shared landscape for crowded populations.

The cherry trees came later.

In 1927, Caroline Bamberger Fuld donated thousands of Japanese flowering cherry trees.

Subsequent planting expanded the collection until spring bloom became the park's best-known visual identity.

That tradition now attracts people who may know little about the park's earlier planning history.

For Newarkers, Branch Brook is also a regional park crossing municipal boundaries and serving neighborhoods far beyond tourists arriving for blossoms.
