Peanut Leap: The Cliffs Are Still Falling

Finish with a landscape that refuses to stay preserved in the way humans prefer.

The Palisades are still breaking apart.

The vertical columns are diabase formed deep underground more than two hundred million years ago when magma intruded into older rock.

Erosion later exposed the resistant sill as the dramatic wall beside the Hudson.

But “ancient” does not mean motionless.

Water enters cracks.

Freezing expands them.

Roots grow.

Gravity waits.

Rockfalls periodically send enormous blocks into the talus slope below.

The park has had to close trails after major falls because the same geology that creates spectacular scenery also creates hazard.

Peanut Leap Cascade adds water to the story.

Streams descend from the plateau and find steep routes over the cliff edge.

After storms, that movement can be dramatic.

Over longer periods, water helps pry the landscape apart.

PIPC notes that most of the talus now below the Palisades accumulated after the last glacier retreated roughly twelve thousand years ago.

Forests grew over the broken rock, making a dynamic slope look stable.

This is the right place to end because preservation language can accidentally imply that the goal is to freeze a landscape in one perfect condition.

That is impossible.

Quarrying was a human choice that could be stopped.

Weathering is not.

Storms are not.

Species migration is not.

The cliffs will continue changing long after every road, monument and park agency is gone.

The achievement of the Palisades conservation movement was not to stop change.

It was to stop one form of destruction long enough for natural change—and public memory—to continue on a different timetable.
