A stone cylinder sticking out of a trail does not look like sophisticated infrastructure.
That is exactly why ventilators are useful stops.
The Old Croton Aqueduct is mostly underground.
Water occupied much of the masonry conduit, but air still had to move.
Pressure needed relief.
Maintenance crews needed access at selected points.
Ventilator shafts rose above the line at regular intervals and gave the buried system places to breathe.
Some incorporated entrances.
Others functioned primarily as air shafts.
This is a good reminder that infrastructure consists of secondary systems nobody notices when everything works.
A water supply is not merely a pipe from source to city.
It needs inspection.
Drainage.
Ventilation.
Access.
Overflow control.
Bridges and culverts.
Workers who know where all of those components are.
The ventilator also turns the trail into a measuring device.
As you walk south, these structures appear periodically and confirm that the grassy corridor is not simply a convenient greenway.
The machine is still under your feet.
The Friends of the Old Croton Aqueduct use surviving ventilators as landmarks because so much of the original conduit remains invisible.
For a modern American visitor, there is another useful comparison.
We routinely walk above buried electrical cables, sewers, fiber-optic lines and water mains without thinking about them.
The nineteenth-century aqueduct creates the same relationship on a much larger geographic scale.
People enjoy trees and views on the surface.
Below them is a piece of infrastructure that helped transform New York into an industrial metropolis.
The city grew because systems like this disappeared into the background.
