This small brick engine house became one of the most recognizable buildings in American history.
In October 1859, abolitionist John Brown and his followers seized the federal armory at Harpers Ferry. Their goal was to capture weapons and begin an uprising against slavery.
The raid failed militarily. Brown was captured, tried in Virginia and executed. But the event intensified the national crisis over slavery and became one of the events that helped push the United States toward the Civil War.
The building became known as John Brown's Fort because of its association with the final defensive position of Brown's group. The fort's own physical history is complicated: it was moved several times before returning near its original Harpers Ferry setting.
The important story is not just the building. It is the political shock created by what happened here.
