John Brown occupies an unusual place in American memory.
To some contemporaries he was a terrorist who attacked civilians and federal property. To many abolitionists he became a martyr who acted against the institution of slavery.
A careful historical interpretation avoids reducing him to either a hero or a villain. The documented facts are clear: he led an armed raid, he attempted to seize weapons, people died, and his execution made him a symbol in the national debate over slavery.
