The Point is where Harpers Ferry reveals its geography.
The Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers meet here, creating both beauty and strategic importance.
Water provided transportation, power and a reason for settlement. The rivers helped make Harpers Ferry an industrial centre and influenced the location of the federal armory.
But rivers also shaped military history. Controlling this narrow passage meant controlling movement through an important corridor between the Shenandoah Valley and the eastern United States.
