The Boott Cotton Mills show what the word factory came to mean in nineteenth-century America.

Not simply a building with machines.

A system.

Francis Cabot Lowell and his partners had earlier developed a model in Waltham where spinning and weaving could happen under one roof.

Lowell expanded that logic to city scale.

Cotton arrived as raw fiber.

Machines cleaned, carded, spun and wove it.

Waterpower drove the process.

Managers organized labor.

Boardinghouses supplied workers.

Canals supplied energy.

Capital financed expansion.

The Boott complex, begun in the 1830s, became one of the major pieces of that system.

Factory architecture was shaped by the needs of machinery.

Long floors.

Rows of windows.

Shafting and belts distributing power.

A working day disciplined by bells and production schedules.

For Americans, the important transition is easy to underestimate.

Work stopped being organized mainly around the household, farm or artisan shop.

Thousands of people began living by industrial time.

The clock belonged to the company.

The pace belonged increasingly to the machine.

This is why Lowell matters nationally.

It did not invent every component of industrialization.

It assembled them at a scale that made the future visible.

The factory's scale also changed social visibility.

Hundreds of people entered and left at the same hours.

Production problems became management problems.

Absence, lateness, illness and discipline all became measurable at a new scale.

That is part of the origin of modern management.

Once work is concentrated, managers can compare workers, standardize tasks and track output much more aggressively.

The factory therefore did not only mechanize cloth.

It helped mechanize supervision.
