The Zion–Mount Carmel Highway was not built merely to make local travel easier.

It was built to connect national parks into a tourist circuit.

Construction began in the late 1920s.

The highway and 1.1-mile tunnel opened in 1930, creating a more direct route linking Zion with Bryce Canyon and Grand Canyon travel.

Engineers faced steep sandstone cliffs and a landscape where ordinary road grades were impossible.

The tunnel was bored through rock with large gallery windows opening toward the canyon.

Those openings helped remove excavated material and later became dramatic framed views.

Engineering and sightseeing were designed together.

The project represented a new phase of national-park tourism.

Automobiles had become central.

Visitors expected to see several parks in one regional trip.

States, federal agencies and tourism businesses all benefited when roads transformed isolated scenic sites into a connected itinerary.

The highway also altered the landscape permanently.

Cuts, retaining walls and tunnel portals inserted infrastructure into geology being protected for scenery.

Park designers tried to minimize visual intrusion, but a road through a mountain is not invisible.

For drivers today, the tunnel can feel like an attraction by itself.

Historically, it is more important as network infrastructure.

Zion's popularity did not grow only because people discovered beautiful cliffs.

Government made the cliffs easier to combine with other destinations.

The American road trip became part of the national-park system.
