Yellowstone wolves were eliminated by humans.

Their return was also a human decision.

By the early twentieth century, predator-control programs had killed wolves across the park and much of the West.

At the time, predators were widely treated as threats to desirable game animals and livestock.

The national park protected scenery while actively simplifying its ecosystem.

Attitudes changed through science and politics.

The Endangered Species Act created a legal framework for recovery.

In 1995 and 1996, wolves from Canada were reintroduced to Yellowstone.

The return became one of the world's most closely watched wildlife-restoration projects.

Wolves affected prey behavior and numbers, scavenger food sources and relationships among predators.

Popular media sometimes compresses this into a magical story that wolves “fixed Yellowstone” and single-handedly changed rivers.

The actual ecology is more complicated.

Vegetation, elk populations, climate, beavers, human hunting outside the park and many other variables interact.

Trophic effects are real.

A simple miracle narrative is not.

The political conflict remains complicated too.

Wolves do not recognize park boundaries.

Livestock losses outside protected land create real costs.

State, federal and tribal governments may hold different management goals.

For visitors hoping to see a wolf, Lamar Valley can become a wildlife lottery.

The deeper story requires no sighting.

Yellowstone first removed a native predator because managers believed nature needed improvement.

Later managers restored it because ecological science had changed.

Conservation is not only saving species.

It is admitting previous management was wrong.
