Balanced Rock looks improbably poised, but it is not a loose boulder balanced like a trick. The upper block is attached to a narrower pedestal of softer rock.
Different layers resist weathering at different rates. The more durable cap persists while the material beneath is removed faster.
Nearby, a smaller companion feature known as Chip-Off-the-Old-Block collapsed in the 1970s. That is the fate waiting for Balanced Rock too, although no one can predict the date.
The feature is therefore a lesson in differential erosion. Stability is temporary, and its visual drama comes from seeing the process shortly before one of its possible endpoints. In geological terms, the “balance” is simply a short interval between a wider tower and a pile of fallen rock.
